Three of the city’s leading jazz acts played back to back in Festival Square – all for free

Matthew Halsall is a linchpin of Manchester’s jazz scene – founder of Gondwana Records and a brilliant trumpeter in his own right. He joined us in Festival Square ofor a DJ set of deep spiritual sounds, preceded by two terrific young Manchester acts: groove-based guitar trio Nonunonu and jazz-fusion septet The Mirror Ball Test. And in the afternoon, Gondwana signing Caoilfhionn Rose brought her dreamy singer-songwriter sounds to the Square.

Festival Square’s Records of Reflection invited guests to discuss and play some of the cuts that mean the most to them – and today, it was the turn of Ebor Studio and Feel Good Club with Hattie Pearson. Jonny Shire and Joe Webster of Creating Patterns played the best in world, jazz, funk, disco and electronic music. DamaeDance’s IRMÃ-sister was an exhilarating exploration of the beauty and challenges of women's relationships. And the day opened with a saxophone octet from Chetham’s School of Music.

We would like to thank Therme Group, Co-op, JW Lees, Hawkins\Brown, Buro Happold and Civic Engineers for their contributions to Festival Square.
